Not only that, Ray, but "educated party members" like you are few and far between within the Republican base. The Republican party's anti-science stance in general is going to sink them sooner or later.

The republican party, to which I have belonged each of the 26 years since I turned 18 and first registered to vote, had best play along. Millions like me, who voted for President Obama because we believed that he cared more about principles than politics, and because we saw a man smart enough to be fit to lead the nation, demand it. Health care reform, even pure nationalization, will only hurt some insurers who profit by adding their overhead and profits to our health care costs. Private care markets will remain for those who wish them. There is no excuse for not creating a national system. Americans can and should sacrifice health insurance companies as necessary for the common good. And if the Obama administration's economic recovery plans fail in the shadow of republican proclamations that those plans won't work, proclamations that undermine confidence and thus potentially thwart those plans, American will hold republicans responsible. Then my party will deservedly fall still further in its power and influence. And educated party members like me may finally be forced to leave--even those of us who out of loyalty endured the innumerable national and international embarrassments of the past eight years.
