Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said yesterday that the Philippines nominations to the new seven wonders of the world online contest are continually dropping from the top 7 list.

To date, Tubbataha Reef is now rank 9th while the Chocolate Hills of Bohol is now rank 10th, Underground River in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan is now rank number 11 and Mayon Volcano in Albay is rank 20 in the Top 77 Live Rankings of the worldwide online poll for Seven New Wonders of Nature.

Tubbataja Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a famous national marine sanctuary in Sulu Sea. It is a popular diving site because of its renowned and globally significant biodiversity. The reef is composed of two atolls, North and South Reefs, each has a single small islet that protrudes from the water.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol, is an “unusual geological formation… composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the same size spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers, the hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, giving them the name ‘Chocolate Hills,’” proclaims the New7Wonders site.

Mayon has the classic conical shape of a stratovolcano. It is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Since 1616, Mayon has erupted 47 times. The beautifully symmetrical Mayon volcano, which rises to 2,460 meters above the Albay Gulf, is the Philippines’ most active volcano. The structurally simple volcano has steep upper slopes that average 35-40 degrees and is capped by a small summit crater.

Voters have until Dec. 31 to log in their nominations at www.new7wonders.com and the top 21 finalists at the end of the first round will be announced in January 2009.
