David Hayes now holds a state fishing record, after he caught a 21 pounds catfish using his granddaughter’s $13 Barbie fishing rod. The catfish was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

The story happened last August 5 when David Hayes was out fishing with his 3-year-old granddaughter. Alyssa asked him to hold her Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom. A few minutes later, Hayes saw the float went under so he hauled the rod. He finally caughgt the catfish after 25 minutes.

The state record until then was an 18-pound, 5-ounce fish caught by Wesley Trucks of New Bern in August 2007.
