Today is the 144th birthday of our hero Apolinario Mabini. He is a certified 100% Batangueno and he was one of the country’s heroes who built the Filipino nation. And I think he now owns a political blog if he is still alive today! just kidding!
APOLINARIO Mabini was born on July 23, 1864, the son of a poor peasant couple in Talaga, Tanauan, Batangas. He finished his studies at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and law at the University of Santo Tomas while serving as a copyist in the Court of First Instance in Manila and teaching Latin. He was one of the first to join Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s La Liga Filipina when the later established this organization on July 3, 1892. In 1896, he contracted infantile paralysis, a disability that saved him from incarceration or death before a Spanish firing squad. Andres Bonifacio and the other Katipunan leaders often consulted him and this link was one of the reasons the colonial authorities suspected him of involvement in anti-government activities.
Captured on December 10, 1899, he was deported to Guam in September, 1901, because he refused to swear allegiance to the United States government. He returned, together with General Artemio Ricarte, in February, 1903. Fear of dying in a foreign land ultimately led Mabini to swear allegiance to the United States government. He died of cholera on May 13, 1903.
