Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Filipino Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla as the new apostolic nuncio to Korea. He was the first Filipino Apostolic Nuncio appointed by the Vatican according to DFA and he is the second Asian to hold the post, after Indian Cardinal Ivan Dias in 1987. This announcement was made by Father Theophilus Choi of the Seoul Archdiocese during the Sunday mass at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Hyewahdong.
Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla, (born August 5, 1942, Sogod, Philippines) is the elder brother of Archbishop Francisco Padilla, the third Filipino Apostolic Nuncio appointed by the Vatican in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Archbishop Osvaldo became an ordained Priest, 20 February 1966 and later obtained a doctorate in canon law. He has been an Apostolic Nuncio in Panama (17 December 1990), Sri Lanka (1994), Nigeria (22 August 1998), and Costa Rica (31 July 2003).
