This is a documentary about freedom and individuality. A story about doing what you really want to do. This unconventional i-Witness episode also serves as a trip down the 80’s memory lane, when fashion and music were flamboyant and experimental. Jay Taruc (filipino journalist) discovers what makes Joseph tick when he follows him around for a week of endless retro parties. Taruc’s documentary is a journey into the life and mind of the ultimate party icon, trapped in an 80’s time warp.
Joseph “Jay” Pamintuan grew up in Cebu, Philippines where a local FM radio station instilled his passion for music. When his family decided to transfer to Manila in the 80’s, Joseph experienced his first new wave underground events, where he partied all night. Everyone in the music scene knew him then: band members, new wavers, groupies and mobile disc jockeys alike. In the late 80s, Joseph sported a new wave hairdo, danced the strut and wore a red jacket patterned after Michael Jackson’s Thriller costume.
And after two decades, Joseph is still partying 80’s style. The year 2008 has already begun and finds Joseph still wearing the same hairdo, still performing the same dance moves, still hanging onto the Michael Jackson jacket and still a fixture on the party circuit. How Joseph can go on like this is a mystery to many. But one thing they all agree on – no one can party like him.
